Take away a ten

To take away a ten, the tens digit goes down by one. The ones stay the same.

  1. Start with 58

    5 tens and 8 ones.

  2. Take away one rod

    One less ten. Now 4 tens and 8 ones.

  3. Only the tens change

    58 − 10 = 48. The ones digit stays 8.
