Doubles and near doubles

A double adds a number to itself. A near double is one more or one less.

Learn it

  1. Doubles

    3 + 3 = 6. 4 + 4 = 8. 5 + 5 = 10. Two equal groups.

  2. Near doubles

    6 + 7 is one more than 6 + 6.

  3. Double, then adjust

    6 + 6 = 12. One more is 13. So 6 + 7 = 13.

  1. 7 + 8 = ?

    7 + 7 = 14. 8 is one more than 7, so add 1: 15.

    Answer: 15
  2. 9 + 9 = ?

    A double. 9 + 9 = 18.

    Answer: 18
