Lesson 6 of 8 · Grade 1

What the = sign means

The = sign means both sides are the same amount, like a balance scale.

Step 1

Learn it

  1. A balance

On a balanced scale, the left and right weigh the same.

  2. Same amount

    5 + 3 is 8. 4 + 4 is 8. So 5 + 3 = 4 + 4.

  3. Not a signpost

= does not just mean "the answer comes next". It can sit in the middle.

Step 2

Watch how

Two examples, worked out one step at a time.

  1. 5 + 3 = 4 + ?

    The left is 5 + 3 = 8. The right needs to be 8. 4 + 4 = 8, so the missing number is 4.

    Answer: 4
  2. Is 6 + 2 = 9 − 1 true?

    6 + 2 = 8. 9 − 1 = 8. Both sides are 8, so it is true.

    Answer: True

Step 3

Play with it

Add blocks until both sides weigh the same.
